It's a great post and very popular, but now even more dominating of the sidebar...

Yeah, so, Gamecat, if you're reading this, how about moving it to your personal subblog so we can have a functional sidebar again?

Or rework Kinja to having a freshness date (if you will) for articles that can be considered top stories (maybe a week or two).

Did anyone ever figure out where this was reposted that caused it o pop up like that again?

Yeah, Facebook inserted it as a related stories link for all sorts of aerospace posts. 170k views later... it's finally trickling down to a crawl.

Not seeing that post anymore would be a great start. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, I'm just ready for other stuff to float to the top, especially since it's a book excerpt (albeit a very cool one).

For that many views you should send Gawker media a bill, cause you know they cashed in on it.

Just throwing this out there- I'm not taking a dig at you and it's a great post. It's just ending up at the top of the sidebar really frequently these days and this latest change knocks even more off the list.

I'm not taking it personally. At all. It's been irritating on a few levels for me as well (seriously, I've probably encountered more than 100 notifications from this post alone in the last week).
It is dying off, and the traffic is practically negligible (~3k views per day now) we just need to get one or two decent posts to get popular and it'll get pushed back out of the way and likely die down to it's normal behavior (where it periodically would get back on the list for a few hours, and then die down again for another few weeks/months).

Before I do that, I want to see what happens with the post in the next day or two. It should die off if the data trends are any indication.

I mean, you do you, but I don't think it's fair to say (in your other response) that the reason it's lived so long is that there haven't been "one or two decent posts" to come along and knock it off the top spot in the past month and a half. There's been a lot of great content, and while 3K page views a day may be negligible compared to what it was, it's still miles above 95% of Oppo posts.

With any luck, this new Smithsonian article will pull traffic away: http://www.airspacemag.com/flight-today/b…

Not disagreeing at all. But it's going to go away. Traffic isn't infinitely sustainable. And any post which ends up on the front page at this point should have the sustained traffic to knock it off it's perch. If it's still there tomorrow I'll reconsider.
